On April 25, Director Bong Joon Ho, who won four Oscars last year for Parasite, including Best Director, surprised everyone by presenting the Best Director Award live from the Dolby Cinema at Megabox COEX in Samsung dong, Seoul. The award was presented to Chloe Zhao for Nomadland at Union Station in Los Angeles. Prior to announcing the winner through interpreter Sharon Choi, Bong Joon Ho shared each Best Director nominee’s inspiring reflections on the meaning of filmmaking.

In addition, the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles hosted a red-carpet event with vaccinated frontline workers where Oscar®-nominated actor Bryan Cranston presented the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award to the Motion Picture Television Fund (MPTF). He shared his personal affection for the organization that provided care for his late actress mother after her Alzheimer’s diagnosis. The MPTF provides a wide variety of programs and services to care for industry members in need.

Since 2002, the U.S. Academy Awards have been hosted annually at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. However, this year’s Academy Awards ceremony was held via satellite hook-ups for the first time in history at Union Station in L.A., and in multiple locations around the world, including London, Paris, and Sydney.

Dolby Cinema is a next-generation premium movie theater. It combines Dolby Vision imaging technology, Dolby Atmos sound, and is specially designed to fully immerse the audience into the lives of the characters and the world the filmmaker created. Following the official launch of Korea’s first Dolby Cinema at Megabox COEX in July 2020, two additional Dolby Cinema theaters have opened at Megabox Anseong Starfield and Megabox Namyangju Hyundai Outlets Space One respectively.
